Majority of Fortinet Firewalls Found Vulnerable to CVE-2023-27997

A major flaw in Fortinet firewalls, a widely used network protection solution across many organizations, has been identified. An astonishing 335,923 devices were found to be vulnerable to CVE-2023-27997. This raises major concerns for organizations depending on Fortinet firewalls for network security.

This CVE-2023-27997 vulnerability lets hackers surpass authentication mechanisms and acquire unauthorized access to the administrative interface of the firewall. This would allow the attacker to execute code on the device by utilizing a heap-based buffer overflow. This could lead to network compromise and affect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the device.

A heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability [CWE-122] in FortiOS and FortiProxy SSL-VPN may allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code or commands via specifically crafted requests.

The flaw in Fortinet firewalls has a significant risk to organizations. For this reason, if the customer has SSL-VPN enabled, Fortinet is advising customers to take immediate action to upgrade to the most recent firmware release. If the customer is not operating SSL-VPN the risk of this issue is mitigated – however, Fortinet still recommends upgrading.
